Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

Palaeography: Older LI.

This fragment preserves very interesting descriptions of cult objects. In lines 11′-12′ mount Kammaliya is treated, which is associated to Ḫarziuna in KUB 53.43 (Forlanini 2009: 57 fn. 57).

5′: The expression kēzza kēzza is to be considered a variant of the more usual kēzkēzziya.

6′: The interpretation of the sequence ŠA AN ZI is uncertain; formally it would belong to šāi- “to become sulking, angry; to quarrel with each other,” which seems unlikely in the present context. An emendation in šiyanzi (〈 šāi- / šiye- “to impress; seal; put on”) is problematical, too. Güterbock (1983: 210 with fn. 50) tentatively proposed to read ŠA anzi, where anzi would be a haplographic writing of the goddess Anzili without determinative (for which he adduces a parallel).

6′/7′: Cf. Kp 15/45a iii 8. The unit used is uncertain: based on the traces certainly not šekan; perhaps SIG.KÙŠ?

8′: A phonetic writing is also possible, e.g. gur-zi-ip-p[a-an], cf. KUB 38.6+ i 27′, KBo 2.1 ii 22.

9′: Note the remarkable presence of an (engraved?) image of a king Muršili.

14′: For phonetic āššu in lieu of the more usual SIG5 cf. KUB 38.2 ii 10′.
